Venice

I spent twenty-four hours in Venice with a friend in January, arriving from Zagreb after an eight-hour bus ride, circumnavigating the Adriatic Sea and passing through Ljubljana and Trieste. It was a cold and clear weekend. We wandered around the canals and narrow streets, getting lost often and stopping for pastries and coffee to warm ourselves up from the winter chill. I thought the architecture in the San Marco area was intricate and beautiful. And seeing the sun on the buildings and canals made it easy to see why Venice has been the subject of so many paintings. I especially liked our long walk back to the bus station, which took us out of the crowded areas in San Marco and across the Grand Canal to find quiet canals, small squares and residential streets on the other side.
